Vibrantly Themed Splash Pads Featured at Perfect Day® at CocoCay®

We’re proud to be featured at two beautiful splash pads that can be enjoyed whenever passengers spend a Perfect Day® at CocoCay® courtesy of Royal Caribbean. Guests can cool off, run and play, or relax on the sidelines at both Splashaway Bay designed by Martin Aquatic Design & Engineering or at Captain Jill’s Galleon designed by the Life Floor Studio. These two projects at CocoCay are quintessential examples of Life Floor’s custom cutting technology and our ability to match any aquatic feature’s theming.

Splashaway Bay has a vibrant and whimsical underwater theme with bright inlays and shapes that match the graphic design of the play structure panels on the splash pad. This engaging design enhances play value by inspiring kids and families to create a variety of games hopping from color to color and shape to shape. The pairing of the surface design with this splash pad’s play structures and water features has easily made Splashaway Bay one of many focal points on the island. As a result, it has received recognition across the aquatics industry, including being named a 2019 AI Dream Design.

At Captain Jill’s Galleon, Life Floor surrounds a pirate vessel in a wavy pattern designed to mimic the water and shore beneath the massive hull. Sandy “islands” feature water cannons for water play at the surface level. As children venture down porthole slides and engage with the splash features, they can easily imagine sailing the high seas with the vast expanse of the ocean surrounding the island on the horizon.

Transforming Safety and Design at Hills Swimming

Hills Swimming Swim School

Hills Swimming has been a long-time community favorite swimming school in Kenthurst, New South Wales, Australia. Prior to Life Floor, owners Julie and Deny Zancanaro tried to minimize slip-and-fall incidents with large interlocking rubber mats that were difficult to clean and maintain. The Zancanaros were frustrated with the mats not being an adequate solution around the pool deck and decided to do some research into a safer alternative surface.

After - Life Floor

After considerable research, they decided to purchase Life Floor’s Ripple 2.0 tiles for their pool deck. Two colors were recommended, Bluebird and Aviator, from Life Floor's High Tide theme to complement the existing colors of the facility. The tiles were laid in a bold zig-zag arrangement across the pool deck that also included metric depth markers.

We are absolutely delighted with the transformation Life Floor has made to our centre. It looks great, it’s keeping everyone so much safer as they move around the wet pool deck, and it’s a lot easier to clean than the rubber mats we had.

Thank you to Julie and Deny Zancanaro at Hills Swimming for choosing Life Floor to make your swim school’s pool deck safer and more beautiful for your students!

One of our most popular requests is to add elements of branding to surfaces - from giant logos to inlays that represent the facilities where they’re installed.

As you can see, the opportunities and options are truly endless!

So how do we do it?

The process varies by project. In some cases, like in the instance of giant circles, organic shapes can be hand cut on site by a skilled installation team. Large swooping curves can often be achieved this way as well.

In other cases, projects come factory cut with labeled parts and diagrams to streamline the install process on site and to ensure design accuracy.

Why don’t all customers take this approach?

Creating Custom Shapes, Logos, and Designs with Life Floor Tiles

These designs are all amazing and we love that we’re able to create them! Unfortunately, some of these examples are out of budget for some customers. When dealing with curvy or custom designs, more material is needed to account for the amount of scrap created when trimming our square tiles to create these shapes. Installation costs are a bit higher as well due to the attention to detail needed to get the designs installed properly.

Is there a more budget-friendly way to custom cut designs?

Of course! In some cases, customers have opted for a repeatable inlay that can be cut from a single tile to help brand or theme their space. A great example of this is the maple leaf inlay we created for the Maple Grove Community Center

Creating Custom Shapes, Logos, and Designs with Life Floor Tiles

In other cases, a custom design only covers a small portion of a project while the rest of the design sticks with some of our more budget-friendly design options like our preferred colors or standard tile shapes. At the Courtyard by Marriott Anaheim, a few custom inlays and activities were interspersed throughout our simple pattern of square tiles in our High Tide theme

Creating Custom Shapes, Logos, and Designs with Life Floor Tiles

Another great way to incorporate a curved design is to limit the amount of tiles that need to be trimmed into a custom shape. At the splash pad at the Australia Zoo, only the perimeter of the “pond” needed to be cut while all other tiles could be installed as full square pieces.

While these projects all take a little extra effort during the design, manufacturing, and installation processes, we always love the results! Have an idea in mind that you’d like to explore with our team? Reach out to us and we’ll do our best to make it a reality!

Our Top 5 Life Floor Design Tips

While our Studio Team is happy to create design renderings for our clients, many customers and partnering designers have expressed interest in creating their own flooring designs. For anyone looking to get started with their own Life Floor projects, we’ve put together five of our top design tips to help guide the process!

Include Three or More Colors in Designs

We’ve found that designs containing three or more colors look best after installation. As an added benefit, they minimize visibility of debris or regular wear over time. This concept is similar to how complex carpet designs are applied in high traffic areas like casinos. An intricate or varied pattern will hide most imperfections. In contrast, any debris or marking on a solid field of color will be very apparent. We know it’s impossible to keep pool decks and splash pads absolutely spotless all day so this technique helps aquatic facilities continue to look their best. Multi-color designs also enhance spaces where they’re installed by creating vibrant and interesting patterns at the surface level. These designs are vast improvements to drab fields of grey concrete! They lend themselves to great theming opportunities as well.

Design within Project Budgets

While the sky's the limit for some customers, most are looking to stick within a specific budget. With a wide range of design and pricing needs in mind, we’ve created a variety of shape and color options to accommodate an array of project types.

Our tiles are available in four shapes - squares, triangles, rectangles, and hexagons. Our square tiles are the most cost-effective option both in terms of material and installation costs. Triangles and rectangles have very similar material costs (since they’re just half squares). It’s important to note that they are slightly more expensive to install since more pieces are involved and the designs are typically a bit more complex. Of all of our shapes, hexagons are the most expensive.

Beyond these standard tile shapes, we can also custom cut our tiles into just about anything - curves, logos, games, images, you name it! These unique designs look great but use more material, require more factory preparation, and take more time to install so they’re generally the most expensive.

Choosing an area as an accent piece can also enhance facilities within budget. This focal point can add visual interest to an entire project while also keeping the overall cost lower by using a simpler design throughout.

There are many ways to mix and match our tile shapes and colors to achieve a great project look. Hopefully these basics help inform some of the best opportunities to create some stellar designs that are also affordable at any price point!

Use a Staggered Grid for Tile Layouts

Staggered Grid

Standard (Checkerboard) Grid

While most people generally assume that our square tiles are best arranged in a standard (or checkerboard) grid, we actually recommend designing with our tiles on a staggered grid. We’ve found that this layout is ideal for ease of installation and maximum durability over time. Layouts that use standard grids are still a beautiful option; however, we generally recommend designing with them only for smaller applications or for designs that really rely on the checkerboard tile layout for a distinct pattern or look.

Accent Designs with Theming and Play Options

Are you looking to add some sea creatures to your splash pad design? No problem! We have several pre-designed thematic inlays, like fish and crabs, that fit within single square tiles. We can also cut larger creatures, whales or dolphins for instance, across several tiles.

Want to add a game into the surface? We can custom cut nearly anything into Life Floor. Some popular choices have included hopscotch and checkerboards.

For branding opportunities or to include a facility’s logo within a design, we can precision cut all of the parts in advance at our factory. They arrive ready to install to ensure brand accuracy and a smooth installation process on site. A great example of a large-scale logo we’ve created recently was one that we produced for the Fun Spot splash pad in Orlando, FL. The finished product and a diagram showing all of the precut parts are pictured above.

Take Advantage of Our Online Resources

Did you know that there are helpful resources on the Design Studio page of our website related to creating designs with Life Floor tiles?

For design inspiration, our Portfolio and past Lookbooks are great places to start!

One of the most popular resources we have posted is a chart that shows color equivalents for all of our tile colors. If you design in Adobe Illustrator (like we do), the Hex codes are very helpful to get the colors in your layouts as accurate as possible.

Our pre-established color palettes and tile patterns have been popular options for our customers. Head to the Themes and Patterns pages to explore these designs. We even have downloadable templates that can be used in Adobe Illustrator for anyone looking to cut and paste these options into their projects. Use one of these as designed or vary it slightly to cater it to your project!

To get started with a scaled tile grid to represent Life Floor in AutoCAD, we have templates that include hatches for both Metric and Imperial designs.

Looking for technical details to better understand how our tiles integrate during installation? Those are available on our Specs + Resources page as well!

While the tips above cover our major suggestions, these are only some of the best practices we’ve established over the years! Want to learn more or have questions for our Studio Team? Feel free to email us at design@lifefloor.com. We love partnering with designers and take great joy in seeing what other great projects are dreamed up by other companies around the world!

Designing with Life Floor's Tile Shapes

Did you know that Life Floor comes in four standard shapes? Our tiles were originally manufactured as 24” square tiles, but rectangles, triangles, and hexagons have been developed over the years. With these shapes, our Studio Team and partnering design firms have been able to imagine an endless range of possibilities for aquatic facilities around the world. Through countless different configurations and color combinations, our tiles enable opportunities to create beautiful environments with unparalleled safety benefits. Explore the design options available with our standard shape offerings below!

Squares

Life Floor Squares

Our square tiles can be arranged in randomized multi-color fields to evoke environmental elements like sand and water. They can also be configured in colorful gradient patterns using a range of tones from our palette. For a more classic design, squares look beautiful when arranged in a checkerboard grid. For a more modern effect, square tiles of the same color can be installed consecutively to form long, rectangular configurations. Some facilities have even opted for a staggered zig-zag pattern. To add even more visual interest, customers often request thematic inlays that fit within a single tile. While the original shape of our tiles may be simple, it is filled with the potential to create both beautiful and cost-effective design solutions!

Triangles

Life Floor Triangles

Simply by cutting our square tiles diagonally to form right triangles, we’ve created an array of new design opportunities. These tiles have been the most popular choice when creating gradient effects, especially when mimicking coastlines. They’re also an excellent choice for adding accents of color around a facility. For a more geometric approach, mirrored triangles can be arranged to create an even larger pattern. Images like pine trees can even be created in a surface design by combining triangles with our rectangle and square tiles!

Rectangles

Life Floor Rectangles
Life Floor Rectangles

Our rectangular tiles present the opportunity to design with a popular 1’ x 2’ grid or to create long plank effects by aligning tiles of the same color in a row. They enable designers to create more modern, geometric patterns. Similar to our other shapes, rectangles can be arranged in gradients or they can be used to break up solid fields of color with bright accents. Due to their size, rectangles are a popular choice in smaller spaces like locker rooms. Try varying the rotation of these tiles to achieve a dynamic look.

Hexagons

Life Floor Hexagons
Life Floor Hexagons

In 2019, we unveiled the newest addition to our shape collection: the hexagon. Our Studio Team loves how this playful, geometric shape transports visitors to colorful landscapes with intricate and delightful patterning. Our hexagon tiles add immediate visual complexity to any space, without the need for additional design work or custom cutting. They can be used in more natural designs to mimic the look of a sparkling body of water or a varied landscape of grass, dirt, and rocks. Hexagons also lend themselves to radial designs and are perfect for splash pads.

While these shapes encompass our standard options, Life Floor tiles can also be cut into virtually anything! We commonly install curved designs, logos, custom shapes, and inlays. Is there a new standard shape you’d like to see us offer? Let us know in the comments section below!

Flooring Design Themes for Aquatic Facilities

When designing with Life Floor, clients are often looking to create or enhance an existing theme at a facility. Since our tiles are specifically engineered for use in aquatic environments, these spaces are often themed around water; however, sometimes new themes are imagined as well! We love the creativity that goes into envisioning these spaces. Check out some of our favorites that have been installed as well as some ideas for themed splash pads that haven’t been built yet!

Under the Sea

Our blue tones and sea creature inlays are most often featured in spaces that have an underwater theme. Some spaces are more whimsical with octopus tentacles and others are more abstract using a triangle gradient or randomized squares. Curvy waves are also a popular choice for clients looking to emulate an under the sea look.

Into the Wild

Several facilities with Life Floor installations have a woodsy or wilderness theme. These spaces typically feature earth tones of tans, browns, and greens as well as thematic paw print inlays. The designs that we’ve proposed for these spaces have used a combination of our available shapes including triangles, rectangles, and hexagons.

Sunny Beachscapes

Adding a beach element to a water-themed splash pad increases visual interest and the opportunity to feature different inlays across the sand and sea. One of our largest beach designs, pictured below at Atlantis the Palm Dubai, features a triangle gradient and a clear progression from land to water and back to land. Other projects with this theme feature a body of water surrounded by sand or, the opposite, an island surrounded by water. Some customers have even opted to add pirate treasure hunt themes to their tropical islands!

The city of Shoreview renovated the existing Indoor Tropics Waterpark pool deck in late 2018. They chose Life Floor in sandy shades and a natural Slate texture to reflect the tropical beachside theme of the park. Guests and staff immediately recognized the additional comfort and safety Life Floor provided. Shortly after, the city moved forward with the decision to add Life Floor to the locker rooms. “Adding Life Floor to the locker rooms was something a lot of people noticed right away: ‘Oh great, you got rid of the slippery floor!’” Buck noted once Life Floor had been installed.

The build-out for Bamboo Bay, the multi-level spray structure expansion, was completed a few months after in early 2019. The city again chose Life Floor to cover the entire surrounding deck of the structure and the nearby locker rooms.

We have really enjoyed Life Floor. It has definitely made our deck that used to be so hot much better to walk on. It’s great.
— Hunter Hardeman, Aquatic Supervisor of Grapevine

The City of Grapevine, TX provides an impressive aquatic program to the surrounding community with both indoor and outdoor facilities to play, exercise, and compete. With an average summer temperature of 96 degrees, the city experiences extremely hot concrete decks that can hit 140 degrees in the afternoon. Grapevine chose Life Floor because of the tile’s unique ability to dissipate heat underfoot. Unlike concrete, Life Floor tiles do not absorb heat, which is why the tiles feel comfortable to walk on in the summer sun. The city also installed Life Floor in the locker room areas to help reduce slip and fall injuries.

The City of Winter Haven, FL built the splash pad at Trailhead Park in 2016. The city opened it originally with a concrete finish for the surface and they’ve resurfaced it about 3-4 times with different products. After experiencing some slip and fall incidents, they tried a rubberized paint with a sand-like substrate in it; however, injuries were still problematic. The committee at Winter Haven ultimately opted for Life Floor, pleased with the fact that Life Floor met all of the requirements they needed to solve while also being certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 50.

Not only does it look awesome but it meets many criteria of fall and slip resistance and we’ve gotten nothing but great feedback from the product and that we did something to address our slip and fall issues.

We haven’t had a single major incident of people getting hurt on Life Floor, and it’s worth the peace of mind that the kids are safe.
— Heather Re, Aquatics Supervisor Westfield Memorial Pool

After 5 years of enjoying Life Floor, Westfield Memorial Pool decided to redesign their splash pad to create a centerpiece attraction at their aquatic facility. The city’s main objectives were to refresh the space as a way to drive membership sign-ups and to create a beautiful environment where families could share memories on social media. By collaborating with the Life Floor Studio team, the Westfield splash pad now features a vibrant, unique octopus design that guides kids through and around splash features adjacent to the facility’s zero-depth leisure pool.

5 Reasons Why Aquatic Facilities Choose Life Floor’s Predefined Themes and Patterns

While Life Floor can be used to create virtually any pattern or design on a flooring surface, we’ve created a catalog of Themes and Patterns as a starting point for customers looking for design inspiration. These options can match or complement a facility’s overall look while also providing the standard benefits that come with any Life Floor installation. Pairing the safety, comfort, and durability of our tiles with these aesthetically interesting designs has added play value and theming to aquatic facilities across the country and around the world. Here are some of the top reasons why customers have chosen to explore our Themes or Patterns for their projects!

Multi-Color Designs

All of our Themes, or color palettes, are designed with three or more colors to optimize how Life Floor installations look over time. Our reason for favoring a multi-colored design approach is that monochromatic surfaces, much like single-color carpets, show regular wear or debris much more quickly. Since many of our projects are located outdoors where it’s not uncommon for occasional leaves, twigs, dirt, or grass to make their way onto splash pads, we’ve found that breaking up the field of color makes these surfaces look best for an extended period of time. As an added benefit, installations that use Life Floor Themes often enliven and complement surrounding parks and aquatic spaces with a visually interesting palette and design.

Considerable Cost Savings

Our Themes showcase combinations of some of our most popular colors. Customers looking to add safety and design often opt to use these color families as starting points for their designs.

Since Life Floor is manufactured as standard 24”x24” tiles, our Square Patterns (301, 401, 501) offer the greatest cost savings by maximizing the full use of the material. Installation time is lowest for these options as well. Our Triangle (302, 402, 502) and Rectangle (305, 405, 505) Patterns offer a combination of full and half tiles, providing an efficient use of material that minimizes waste. Installation time is slightly longer since these Patterns are a bit more complex; however, many of our budget-conscious customers still opt for these designs given the added visual interest they provide.

Overall, we’ve found that when municipalities are interested in adding a safety solution to their aquatic facilities or want to upgrade to meet the NSF/ANSI 50 standard for aquatic surfacing, they most commonly opt for the Theme and Pattern options described above. These designs provide all of the benefits of Life Floor at the best prices.

Reduced Time to Receive a Quote

Because our Themes and Patterns are pre-established, creating a rendering that fits within the boundaries of a specific project area is a fairly quick process. When compared to the time required to create fully custom designs, this approach fast-tracks the quoting process for customers looking to receive budgetary numbers in a shorter amount of time.

Design Options that Eliminate the Guesswork

For customers looking for a basic surfacing solution or who don’t have a specific design in mind, our pre-set Themes and Patterns have been created based on established best practices and provide a variety of looks to accommodate a range of facilities. These designs feature sets of colors that are proven to work well together and layouts that have been historically favored by our customers over time. Having the ability to pick and choose from this catalog of options eliminates most guesswork for many of our customers, especially those that are primarily focused on providing a safety solution at their facilities.

An Affordable Starting Point for Custom Options

Many of our customers have asked for designs that begin with a Theme and/or Pattern, but are modified in some way to better suit their specific facility’s needs. For instance, some might swap out a color or two from a Theme to shift the color palette in a slightly different direction. Others might choose a preset Pattern, but pair it with a completely custom color palette. Some customers have opted to add inlays, like the ones shown below, to contribute to the play value and theming of their facilities. We’ve also found that some people go with an affordable Theme and Pattern to better balance the cost of a project that requires the addition of a specialty logo or play feature in the surface design. Anything can be customized as needed and our Themes and Patterns serve as a perfect starting point for the conversation!

City of Winter Haven Reopens Splash Pad with Improved Safety Surfacing

Trailhead Park’s Splash Pad in Winter Haven, FL has provided significant value to the city’s community over the past four years. It’s become a popular spot for families to cool off in the hot Florida sun and spend time together. This 4,200 sq ft splash pad opened originally with a concrete finish, but the facility unfortunately experienced several slip and fall incidents on the slick surface. With calls from the community to improve the safety of the splash pad, the City of Winter Haven applied a popular non-skid rubberized paint to try and reduce the number of injuries. Unfortunately, the issue persisted, and the city began to research options that would yield better results so they wouldn’t have to redo the surfacing a fourth or fifth time.

Trailhead Park’s Splash Pad in Winter Haven, FL

Life Floor’s East Coast Regional Manager, MaryAnn Eifert, reached out to the City of Winter Haven via FRPA’s E-Connect after learning about the splash pad’s chronic slip and fall issue and introduced them to Life Floor. The city was most excited to learn about the product’s built-in slip-resistance since it had the potential to solve many of their chronic slip and fall issues. It was also happy to hear about its certification to NSF/ANSI Standard 50, which provides unbiased testing results of Life Floor’s performance.

High+Tide+301.jpg

The City of Winter Haven had a set budget that they wanted to stay within, so MaryAnn presented our pre-established High Tide Theme paired with our economically-friendly square pattern 301. This combination simulates the blue tones of a seascape, offering a simple layout while still allowing for limitless play. By choosing this option, the city was able to stay within budget and provide Life Floor as a safety solution to the Winter Haven community. Since Life Floor is truly one of its kind being the only splash pad safety surfacing certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 50, and with Inside Edge as its certified North American Installation Partner, the facility staff was able to present this plan to city council as a sole-source bid. By using the sole-source bid model, the city was able to save more time and money by eliminating the need to bid out other products since Life Floor’s certification and benefits demonstrate that it is both unique and superior to concrete and other surfacing options.

They gave us a design and a quote, it was in our budget and met all of our needs.
— Andy Palmer, Parks Planning & Strategic Initiatives Manager
Trailhead Park’s Splash Pad in Winter Haven, FL

Once the improved surface was installed, over 1000 community members showed their support via Facebook and celebrated the City of Winter Haven for addressing such a prominent issue in the community by installing a safety surface at the Trailhead Park Splash Pad. The Winter Haven Sun then picked up the story and featured the splash pad on the front page of the newspaper in their article Upgraded Splash Pad Reopens To Smiles

The city staff themselves were also pleased with the results. Andy Palmer, the city’s Parks Planning & Strategic Initiatives Manager, stated how pleased he was with the entire process.

Not only does it look awesome but it meets many criteria of fall and slip resistance ... we’ve gotten nothing but great feedback from the product and that we did something to address our slip and fall issues.
— Andy Palmer, Parks Planning & Strategic Initiatives Manager

Palmer was also impressed with the professionalism and friendliness of Inside Edge’s installation crew.

We work with many specialty item crews such as playground and pour-in-place rubber installers. The crew who installed the Life Floor was one of the best we have seen. They were professional, friendly, clean, and the workmanship [was] exceptional.
— Andy Palmer, Parks Planning & Strategic Initiatives Manager

We’d like to extend a special thank you to the City of Winter Haven for your business and collaboration in transforming your parks into a safer and more playful space for your community. Thank you as well to the Inside Edge Safety Surfaces team for your continued excellence in installation and for your commitment to Life Floor’s mission!

The Benefits of Diversifying Play Features in Aquatic Environments

Everyone experiences play in different ways. It’s the reason why there isn’t just one type of spray feature or just one type of pool. Aquatic environments are always changing and adapting to new trends and regulations in the industry. Likewise, aquatics facility directors and operators are constantly evaluating updates that will deliver increased value to their guests and members. In order to provide features that appeal to a wide variety of individuals, facility staff needs to choose what combination of elements will allow for limitless play for their intended audiences.

The Benefits of Diversifying Play Features in Aquatic Environments

Providing options for guests to engage with a facility in different ways is a crucial component of play value. At Life Floor, we talk about this concept often because it’s a central tenet of why we design safety surfacing to be interactive and engaging. Play value directly influences guest perception of a facility and can be a determining factor of whether or not guests will return. For example, if a child has a better experience at a park farther away, parents may be more inclined to return to that park even if it is more inconvenient.

The Benefits of Diversifying Play Features in Aquatic Environments

One way to increase play value is to provide experiences for different age groups. Any type of water play for infants and toddlers can be seen as risky from their perspective. For instance, interacting with a simple spray feature on a splash pad is often a new and exciting experience. For older children, riding down high-speed water slides, scaling lofty towers, or getting drenched under tipping buckets can be seen as more exhilarating ways to interact with aquatic environments. These different features help shape children’s development at different stages.

Awareness of how specific age groups prefer to interact with water features can be meaningful when determining how to zone a facility properly. Lopesan’s Costa Bavaro Resort is a good example of zoning for different development stages in a child’s life. At this facility, large landscaped “islands” separate the larger risky play area, equipped with slides and high platforms, from the adjacent splash pad, where smaller children may feel more comfortable. While these zones are located on opposite sides, they are also connected across one large aquatic play area. This integration allows children the freedom to move from one area to the next, encouraging them to balance safety and adventure. When an aquatic play area offers this range of features, guests can gradually choose to engage with riskier play elements, which ultimately helps to boost both decision-making skills and self-esteem. Accommodating a variety of preferences also increases play value and enables families of all ages to enjoy these spaces for longer periods of time.

The Benefits of Diversifying Play Features in Aquatic Environments

Social interaction is another crucial part of play learning. Just as it may be difficult for a child to play house alone, it is important for them to be able to collaborate with other children in aquatic environments as part of their experience. Spray features, water tables, and interactive activities that contribute to this social play can elevate learning in both creativity and problem solving. Children are able to boost their communication and social skills as they practice working together and learning to share or compromise as they explore these environments together.

Diversity of play is encouraged by maximizing the creative options available; however, these options don’t have to be limited to the spray features, slides, and towers on site. The design of a facility’s floor can also enhance play value by giving children the opportunity to creatively invent games based on the patterns and images below their feet. When an aquatic surface is also cushioned and slip-resistant, children can more confidently run, jump, and explore to fully enjoy all that a facility has to offer.

The Benefits of Diversifying Play Features in Aquatic Environments

By engaging with visitors more holistically across all features of an aquatic design to accommodate different age groups and comfort levels, facility supervisors, operators, and decision makers can create more encompassing parks filled with limitless possibilities for play. The experiences they offer can encourage important developmental milestones for children while also creating long-lasting family memories along the way.

10 Ways to Give Your Aquatic Facility a Competitive Advantage

How do you ensure that guests are choosing your aquatic facility over others? And when they do visit, what is encouraging them to extend their stay? The simple answer to this question is to provide elements they aren’t able to receive elsewhere - it’s a key principle of competitive advantage. On a very basic level, visitors need to feel comfortable and excited about amenities. While location weighs into the convenience factor of which facility a visitor may choose, other factors such as superior safety, cleaner surfaces, level of shade, and play features can all sway decisions.

Ultimately, guests are looking for the best possible experiences they can give their families. Parents want to ensure their kids have fun over summer vacation and want to fill their childhoods with positive memories of fun. They’re going to choose to visit environments that support these good experiences and they’re going to choose locations based on perceived value.

Curious about how you can increase your facility’s perceived value? Keep reading for our top 10 tips:

1. Cleanliness of Facilities

Maintaining a clean facility is more important now than ever during the midst of COVID-19. As facilities begin to reopen, parents want to ensure their children are avoiding coming into contact with viruses and bacteria. One or two bad reviews online can be enough to sway parents into choosing another facility, so consistent cleaning practices are important.

2. Superior Safety Features

Safety is at the forefront of many parents' minds. For those with toddlers, child-proofing their homes is a familiar task. However, ensuring their children’s safety at splash pads and pools is full of uncertainties. Is the surface cushioned? Is there a lifeguard on duty? Are water shoes needed to give children better traction or to protect against abrasive or hot surfaces? Many questions play into decision making.

One way to ensure the safety of your facility is to walk through your features like a child would or ask visitors how they feel about your facility. It may sound unusual, but get down on your hands and knees or walk around it barefoot. Is the surface abrasive and uncomfortable? Does it feel too hot? Is it slippery? Consider all aspects of play in your analysis to find areas that could be improved.

3. Appropriate Shade Levels and Seating Options

Consider all of your guests and know their demographics. Are grandparents bringing their grandchildren to your splash pad? Is there a shady area that allows them to sit and watch without being uncomfortable? Are there picnic tables so that families can eat lunch together and then resume play or do they have to leave the park for food with the chance of not being able to return? Making sure your guests stay cool, comfortable, and well-accommodated will encourage them to stay longer. By knowing the demographics of your visitors or creating ideal demographics of who you wish would visit your facility, you make the space more welcoming to more people.

4. Exciting and Interesting Play Features

Play features add to the overall play value of a facility. Play features include water jets, sprayers, climbable features, and unique flooring patterns like hopscotch or theming. Having a good balance of engaging features per square foot is important to provide guests with more options of play. Using a safety surface like Life Floor in conjunction with spray features allows your facility to maximize this utilization while providing superior safety. With a surface like Life Floor, you can create engaging designs that work with your existing play features and give parents another draw for visiting your facility. Ultimately, safer play features result in more positive experiences and memories.

5. Keep Accessibility in Mind

Accessibility is often overlooked when designing facilities. Even one concrete step could mean someone’s experience could be prevented entirely. To analyze all aspects of making your facility accessible, we recommend fully immersing yourself in the task - ride a wheelchair from the moment you enter the parking lot all the way to the final destination and utilize different features such as drinking fountains, bathrooms, and play features along the way. It helps you realize firsthand the shortcomings and/or benefits of your facility design.

6. Drinking Fountains

Having one or more drinking fountains on location is important because a lack of potable water means visits can get disrupted and end if guests are thirsty and either forgot to bring water or assumed it would be present at the facility. It is equally important to ensure these fountains are consistently clean and free of contaminants such as gum or other foreign objects that may contain bacteria or viruses.

10 Ways to Give Your Aquatic Facility a Competitive Advantage

7. Accessible and Clean Bathroom Options

For smaller facilities, bathrooms are a luxury; however, offering a bathroom or suggesting one nearby can prolong visits and ensure the cleanliness of facilities. In some cases, learning that they have to leave and go home to use a bathroom may result in children having otherwise avoidable “accidents” in or around the facility. This can cause issues for facility operators that then need to shock the system and eliminate traces of the contaminant. If bathrooms are present, it is also important to ensure that they are clean and maintained since a dirty bathroom can have the same impact as not having one at all.

8. On-site Parking or Free Street Parking

Offering a free parking option can encourage guests to visit your facility that may not have otherwise due to location convenience. By offering parking, you are signaling to your visitors that you value their time and are offering them an amenity to encourage their patronage. Keep in mind that parking should still be accessible to all people and include ramps or valleys in curbs so that people riding wheelchairs can enjoy the facilities as well.

9. Cost

Cost can be a barrier to entry for some guests. Often, having a paid facility can help support other costs such as on-site food, bathrooms, lifeguards, and other luxuries. However, free facilities can encourage guests to visit more often and develop location loyalty. It’s ultimately up to your brand model to decide which option you want to offer and which features are most important for you to provide your guests.

10. Have Fun with It!

Get excited about your facility! Your guests can tell how much effort was put into it, so have some fun with it. Whether it’s getting creative with your signage or introducing a mascot for your city or even installing a unique and engaging floor - your guests will thank you and become champions for your city if they fall in love with your special park. Be proud of the work you’ve accomplished and never stop having fun!

Including Play Elements in Splash Pad Surface Design

Splash pads have become a welcome addition to many communities, water parks, cruise ships, and resorts since they provide water play for guests of all ages. Typically, the main attractions of these areas have been spray features. Some splash pads also incorporate slides and multi-level play structures - essentially playgrounds with water added to them. While these elements offer many different ways to play on splash pads, these facilities become even more exciting when they offer an engaging flooring design. By adding a design or pattern to the surface of a splash pad, not only does the feature look better overall, but it also provides children with the opportunity to play and engage in more diverse ways.

Including Play Elements in Splash Pad Surface Design

A simple way of designing the surface of a splash pad is to make it thematic. This allows the floor to match the look and feel of the features on site and become part of the attraction. For instance, a splash pad with aquatic or sea creature spray features could be designed with colors that mimic the ocean or the beach. To expand on this idea, sea creature shapes embedded throughout the floor can further enhance theming. Facilities can even use these sea creatures for search and find activities. They could invite guests to find all of the seahorses or count the number of starfish, for instance.

Splash pads can also enhance guest experience by including games in the surface design. Hopscotch boards, four square configurations, and Twister-like layouts can all be used to add extra activities to the aquatic play area. Giant mazes could also engage guests in new ways. These flooring features can add play value to a surface that may have otherwise been left blank.

Including Play Elements in Splash Pad Surface Design

Other designs can encourage guests to follow certain paths or hop across certain features. For instance, small lily pad inlays could encourage children to leapfrog across a “pond.” Likewise, winding paths could lead guests through and around spray features. A treasure hunt design could also provide a guided imaginative adventure.

Custom Inlay Design: Swordfish

Splash pad flooring designs also have the potential to engage children with life-sized objects portrayed on the surface. True-to-life inlays of whales or dolphins can be designed into the splash pad as a fun, educational element. Flat shapes of surfboards or boats can encourage children to pretend that they’re exploring the sea.

Including Play Elements in Splash Pad Surface Design

Beyond all of these ideas for thematic elements and games, splash pads can encourage creative free play with simple geometric designs. For a splash pad using a variety of colors, children can invent games out of stepping on tiles of certain colors. A similar idea can be applied to a splash pad that features different tile shapes. Concentric circles or bands of color also inspire engagement in new ways.

All of the designs shown above have been created using Life Floor tiles, which can be customized to any shape or size. Pairing an engaging surface design with our slip-resistant and cushioned tiles has the potential to enhance a simple splash pad with both safety and elements of fun — increasing play value and overall appeal.

The Importance of Free Play in Aquatic Environments

Childhood is a time of limitless imagination, boundless creativity, and wild invention. It’s the one time in life when exploration is encouraged freely without the weight of daily responsibilities other than formal learning and helping with chores. The freedom of being young displays itself in many ways, one of which is free play.

Free play is critical to a child’s development. It enables them to problem solve, think critically, develop stories, and innovate. It can be seen in activities such as building Lego sets, playing house, creating structures and gaining achievements in video games like Minecraft, strategy forming in board games, and simply running through backyards envisioning new worlds. One method of free play continues to evolve as children explore aquatic environments, such as splash pads.

Historically, splash pads have included spray features that inspire thoughts of running under mountainous waterfalls, becoming pirates on a treasure-hunting adventure, or riding gigantic animals through vast seas. Far too often, these features have laid upon a blank canvas of abrasive concrete beckoning for inspiration. Covering this blank canvas with a specific flooring design is one way to further encourage free play. For example, a pirate-themed splash pad could round out the experience for children with an “x marks the spot,” different clues on the island to give more context, and a beach theme with blues symbolizing the water, tans symbolizing the shore, and aquatic creatures sprinkled throughout. It could even include hopscotch inlays to encourage children to jump from shape to shape to get across a certain section of the surface. This concept of adding theming to the flooring design can also help with zoning. For instance, a facility could denote a more adventurous zone with darker blues creating the “high seas” or a calmer zone with tans to portray a peaceful sand-colored beach.

Alternatively, surfaces can display a more simplistic, geometric pattern to encourage a different kind of free play. For example, “the floor is lava” is a common game for children to play by jumping from color to color or chasing each other around by only touching certain patterns. These activities could augment the free play made available by the water features they encounter as they run around.

It should be noted that free play is only as free as children feel while engaging with the aquatic environment. Do they feel like they can tumble to the ground without fear of a bruised knee? Do they think they can jump around without losing their footing and slipping? Are they certain in their games that the only thrill is that of excitement and not of fear of injury?

Life Floor strongly believes that aquatic surfaces should lessen and, if possible, eliminate fear of major injury. It’s natural to get a couple bruises playing; however, if injuries halt play then something needs to change. Our company was founded on the idea that play shouldn’t be painful. Scrapes, cuts, and concussions shouldn’t be a common occurrence on splash pads and pool decks, especially when young children could be getting their initial introductions to aquatic free play. That’s why a central tenet of our brand is safety. Our product provides safer surfaces with cushioning, impact absorption, and slip resistance, allowing kids to play freely as they were meant to play: without fear.

A Call to Action

white-05.png

To our customers, partners, friends and family,

We are far beyond the point where our inaction is acceptable. As a Minneapolis-based company, we stand with the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) community in solidarity and in action against the senseless killing of BIPOC by officers from the Minneapolis Police Department. We are all affected by the legal systems in Minneapolis and we cannot support a system that perpetuates violence and death in these communities. Over the weekend, the Police Chief of Minneapolis declared that the three other officers involved in the killing of George Floyd were complicit in the killing by not doing anything to stop Derek Chauvin. We support the Attorney General's quick and decisive action to charge and arrest all the officers. We are now calling upon the MN Attorney General, Hennepin County District Attorney, MPLS Department of Civil Rights, MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and Police Officers Federation of MPLS to complete a swift, but thorough investigation that will ultimately result in all officers being held accountable by our judicial system. We are asking you to stand with us and take action by calling and emailing the institutions that can bring justice to George Floyd as the work is not done yet.

We are especially using this time to listen to and learn from our BIPOC community. We acknowledge the systemic racism that has plagued our city, state and country resulting in inequity in areas such as housing, education, healthcare, mass incarceration and police treatment. This racism has existed for over 400 years in America and we accept accountability and our role in progressing lasting change that will lead to equity for our BIPOC community. Please consider donating to your own local organizations that further these causes. Minnesota-based organizations that we have chosen to support both in action and financially include:

Minnesota Freedom Fund

Northside Funder’s Group

Many people around the world have asked how Life Floor is doing. Our physical locations are unharmed. We are doing our best to care for each other. We are still operating. And that is all the attention we want to give to ourselves. This is about the movement for racial justice. This is about understanding how our collective lack of action is violently affecting people of color. We wish all of you well across the entire globe, and we hope you stand with us during this time.

National Water Safety Month: Clean Surfaces Make Aquatic Facilities Safer

Welcome to week four of our National Water Safety Month series on issues and topics prominent in the aquatics industry! If you missed last week’s post on accessibility, be sure to check it out. In light of facilities beginning to open up again, this week we’ll be highlighting the importance of having and maintaining a clean aquatic surface.

Concerns have often been raised across industries that have significant touchpoints with the general public about clean surfaces and cleaning guidelines, especially at parks, pools, and splash pads. Recently, these concerns have increased with COVID-19 and have caused facilities to reevaluate how they are sanitizing surfaces and features to avoid spreading disease. Following the Model Aquatic Health Code, surfaces should be cleaned to remove 99.9% of microorganisms. Unfortunately, many surfaces are porous and absorb materials. For example, concrete is 97.4% impervious according to third party testing involved with NSF/ANSI Standard 50. While 99.9% of microorganisms can be cleaned from its surface, it may still absorb contaminants such as fertilizer run-off, bacteria, viruses, and other hazardous fluids. Beyond potentially harboring these contaminants, the permeable nature of a surface like concrete can lead to staining, which makes it more difficult to maintain.

We know that cleaning has always been a forefront topic for operators and supervisors of aquatic facilities. Maintenance can get costly, and it is important to address safety concerns immediately so they do not result in pain points for years to come. Life Floor has strived to improve upon the cleanability of concrete and other surfaces by creating an innovative closed-cell foam product that is 99.7% impervious. Based on third party testing, our tiles are also 99.9% cleanable after having been exposed to harmful bacteria, even in the joints. Offering a safer surfacing solution is our company’s greatest mission and, to do so, we couldn’t just look at obvious improvements such as slip-resistance and cushioning for our tiles. We have been focused on protecting guests not only from physical injury, but also from microscopic threats that could potentially lead to infection or disease. While preventing microbial growth on our product, we have also engineered it to make it extremely difficult to stain. Even spray paint cleans off.

For any aquatic surface, it is also important to make sure to use the right cleaners and understand that a regular maintenance schedule ultimately reduces cost and provides your guests with a positive experience. Life Floor recommends certain cleaners to ensure optimal maintenance of our floors. These include a peroxide cleaner, a degreaser, and a mineral deposit remover. Using all three of these cleaners on a regular schedule ensures that build-up doesn’t occur and that Life Floor installations remain slip-resistant and beautiful.

National Water Safety Month: Improving Accessibility at the Surface Level

Thanks for coming back to week three of our National Water Safety Month series on issues and topics prominent in the aquatics industry! In case you missed it, be sure to check out our previous post about how important it is to reduce slip and fall injuries within aquatic environments. This week our focus is on how accessibility enables a greater and safer way to play.

Creating accessibility in built environments levels the playing field, enabling everyone to interact and explore on their own terms. Today, communities increasingly strive to create inclusive recreation areas that are inviting to guests of all ages and abilities. These facilities attract and encourage a safer and more accessible play experience by using a variety of features and paying attention to certain design elements like spacing, color, size, and flow. This emphasis to provide interactive, social, and active play opportunities for all should also be applied to aquatic facilities, whenever possible. When accessibility is inherent in a facility’s design, even more guests are able to perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with features, leading to a more robust play experience.

With our slip-resistant and cushioned tiles, Life Floor offers an approach to surfacing that enhances aquatic facilities and splash pads by making them safer and more enjoyable to a larger range of guests. Beyond providing a safety surfacing solution, our tiles can also wrap around coping edges and steps to further improve traction for guests that require more stable footing, thereby reducing risk of injury in these areas. Other surfaces commonly found in aquatic environments, such as concrete or ceramic tile, can lead to a less safe or more inaccessible experience due to lack of traction, cushioning, and/or comfort. Enhancing safety at the surface level makes aquatic facilities more accessible to people of all ages and physical abilities, especially those who may be more prone to injury. As a result, very young children can begin to explore water play, the senior population can engage more safely in activities at their community pools, and guests of all abilities are invited to enjoy splash pads and other aquatic features.

bloomington-splash-pad.jpg

While use of a product like Life Floor can enhance safety and accessibility, other design methods can be used at the surface level to further accommodate a wide range of guests. These techniques can involve visual, textural, and mobility considerations.

Use of color at the ground level within aquatic facilities can provide visual cues to a wider range of patrons. For instance, contrasting colors can help the visually impaired differentiate between different depth or surface changes. These visual color cues can supplement traditional depth markers, which do not take into account those who have limited vision or reading abilities. A contrasting colored band of coping around a pool can help to define where the deck ends and the water begins. Likewise, use of contrasting colors at the edges of steps can signal elevation changes, especially when visually obscured by water. Use of more subtle patterns with less contrast across pool decks can help to avoid confusion for patrons that may have challenges with depth perception. Keeping these techniques in mind can create an environment that inspires confidence for a greater range of guests.

Contrasting color bands at step edges help define elevation changes underwater.

A band of contrasting color and texture indicates where the pool deck ends and the water begins.

A band of contrasting color and texture indicates where the pool deck ends and the water begins.

A contrast in textures can also provide a way of differentiating between zones and features. Much in the way that tactile paving bumps signal transitions for the visually impaired, such as where the sidewalk meets the street, a similar technique can indicate changes within aquatic environments. Varying textures in this way enables people with sensory preferences or low vision to feel distinct differences when entering new areas of a facility. This equips individuals with an understanding of where they are located as well as possible features in their surroundings. At the moment, Life Floor is offered in two distinct textures that have achieved this approach at facilities where it’s been requested along pool edges. Providing these tactile methods of communication has the ability to increase safety and awareness for guests within aquatic facilities.

Sloped transitions make an elevated pool deck surface accessible to all guests.

Sloped transitions make an elevated pool deck surface accessible to all guests.

Ensuring that these spaces accommodate visitors with mobility challenges further increases accessibility. While pool lifts are commonly used, other design features can enhance the ways that guests are able to interact with aquatic environments. For people who ride wheelchairs, installation of ramps, sloped entrances leading into pools, or transition strips at the edges of raised decks or splash pads can enable access to features that may have otherwise been difficult to enjoy. Surfacing materials that provide traction and a more stable experience for these guests will also enhance their ability to confidently navigate these environments. Attention to spacing of features on splash pads can also improve access to more guests, especially those who ride wheelchairs. Designing with attention to mobility in mind ensures that aquatic recreation may be frequented by a greater diversity of patrons, creating a better experience overall.

We’re happy that Life Floor is able to enhance safety and accessibility at facilities in many of these ways as we love watching people of all ages and abilities come together to enjoy aquatic spaces. Equal opportunity to experience play and joy has always been important to our team and we look forward to continuing to equip facilities with a solution that creates beautiful, safer, and more accessible environments for all.

National Water Safety Month: Getting Traction on a Slippery Issue

Welcome to week two of our National Water Safety Month series on issues and topics prominent in the aquatics industry! If you missed last week’s post on safety messaging, be sure to check it out. This week we’ll be talking about how important it is to reduce slip and fall injuries within aquatic environments.

As parents and guardians, the one thing we never want to see is our children getting injured by things that could have been prevented. It’s why new parents child-proof their homes and make sure sharp edges are covered, stairs are barricaded, and cabinets that contain potentially dangerous items like cleaning supplies are locked. Children are learning, growing, and developing natural responses to environmental stimuli. Our duty as adults is to protect them from threats that they aren’t yet able to recognize as dangerous. Child-proofing isn’t meant to completely bubble-wrap kids and shield them from everything; instead, it enables them to explore and be themselves without developing fears of things that have injured them. This is largely why the playground industry transitioned away from concrete and asphalt surfacing to safety surfacing in the 1980s.

National Water Safety Month: Child walking down the stairs into a pool

On surfaces traditionally found in aquatic environments, like concrete, ceramic tiles, and pour-in-place aggregates, there are numerous issues that arise. These surfaces are often slippery when wet, abrasive, hot, and/or non-cushioned. Not only are children slipping and falling, but they are also skinning their knees and elbows, getting concussions, burning their feet, and developing fears of community features that were intended to spark joy and inspire play. Water shoes have been developed as a low-cost alternative to help provide more traction and protection; however, this should signal to the industry that end consumers are unhappy with aquatic surfacing and are trying to improve safety within their personal means. Unfortunately, we’ve seen the effects of these types of surfaces far too often — through news articles about splash pads shut down for safety concerns, from first hand stories we hear from family or friends, or from customers looking to solve major pain points at their facilities.

This is why Life Floor was created. Our co-founders saw a need for safety surfacing on splash pads and at other aquatic facilities, especially when one of them became a new father. He witnessed his young son slip, fall, and hit his head on wet concrete surfacing. When that happened, he saw these facilities in a new light and recognized that changes needed to be made to protect other children like his son. Fast forward nearly a decade and this mission has become a reality. Using safety surfacing standards for dry playgrounds as a historic precedent, NSF International created a new standard within NSF/ANSI 50 recommending safety surfacing for use in all aquatic play areas. In order to be certified to the new standard, surfacing products are required to meet or exceed six criteria, one of which is slip-resistance. Surfaces need to be significantly slip-resistant when wet and maintain slip-resistance even after exposure to harsh UV and pool chemicals. Another one of the six required characteristics of certified products is the need for impact attenuation. Knowing that very small children can stumble and fall regardless of surface type, it is now recommended that splash pad surfaces cushion this fall to a certain extent. These new requirements will add a standard of safety to aquatic play areas that hasn’t been present until now and we’re proud to witness this positive shift in the industry. To learn more about the standard and specifications for certification, download our NSF/ANSI 50 Guide here

National Water Safety Month: Child touching Life Floor

For facilities that have chosen to install Life Floor, there have been numerous testimonials from directors, supervisors, and operators that speak to the evident improvement. Facilities are saving time, energy, and money by lowering (and in some cases eliminating) incident reports at their splash pads, pool decks, and waterparks due to Life Floor’s innovative product. Overall, liabilities are decreasing, lawsuits around surfacing concerns are diminishing, and guest satisfaction is skyrocketing. Here’s what a few of our customers have said:

We definitely noticed a major decrease in our reports: we hardly have any slip and falls on the flooring or reports of ice pack usage. All of that drastically went down. Everyone here from the guests to the desk staff have been singing its praises.
— Shoreview Community Center Shoreview, MN
We notice it because of the incidence rate. We record every injury we get in the park, the injury rate, and saw a significant decrease in injuries. From a data standpoint it has made a big difference.
— SeaWorld Aquatica, Orlando, FL
Children's feet on Life Floor
The color is bright. We had a big fall rate and now we don’t – no injuries since installing.
— Volcano Island Waterpark, Sterling, VA
I have had a lot of people ask about the floor since we’ve installed it, and I always say that the upfront cost is a little scary. It tends to scare people away, I get that. But if you can do it then it’s worth it. Before this we had nothing but issues, and now we’ve not had a single thing go wrong. Don’t worry about the cost, in the long run it is worth it.

This summer will be unique as not all aquatic facilities across the country will be open as usual. We anticipate that, in many communities, splash pads may be the only types of aquatic recreation available this coming season. With limited activities accessible to families, operators are going to be focused on keeping these areas as safe and enjoyable as possible. To learn more about ways that your facility can prevent slip and fall injuries and meet the requirements of the new NSF/ANSI 50 surfacing standard, feel free to contact us - we’re always happy to help.

National Water Safety Month: An In-Depth Look at Safety Messaging

Happy National Water Safety Month! May is one of our team’s favorite months for many reasons, but the number one reason is because summer is rapidly approaching! This usually means that outdoor pools, splash pads, and waterparks are starting to open; however, this year looks a bit different due to safety concerns surrounding COVID-19. As states and communities begin to slowly reopen parks and facilities, we want to ensure that everyone remembers how to stay safe around water. We also want to give operators and aquatics supervisors ways to improve safety at their facilities. Throughout this month, we’ll be publishing blogs and articles on our website and social media to raise awareness for water safety while also suggesting potential ways to update facilities to improve guest experience.

This week, the focus is on safety messaging and how to provide guests with the confidence to enjoy your amenities safely. Safety messaging is present at facilities in many forms such as posted signs and rules, depth markers, no-diving symbols, and underwater contrast strips to show depth changes on stairs and pool bottoms. In light of COVID-19, it is likely that new types of signage for line queues encouraging social distancing at waterparks, similar to those found at grocery stores, will be required for safer re-openings. We anticipate that pools may also need to indicate which swim lanes are open or closed for use as a measure to safely distance visitors. If you’re a pool operator or designer, you know that, regardless of the circumstances, proper messaging in primary contact zones is crucial for a positive guest experience and to help reduce liability for facilities.

Life Floor Depth Markers

One of the largest pain points we’ve noticed in messaging regards depth markers and no-diving symbols. Traditional markers are typically either painted or coated, as well as often made out of slippery ceramic tiles. Painted or coated markers can fade or wear down over time. Ceramic tiles can crack or chip with regular wear. Instances of engraved messaging can also be prone to collection of dirt and debris. Unfortunately these issues can all obscure safety messaging, preventing it from having its intended effect of keeping guests safe. Depth markers made from these methods often need to be replaced or repaired fairly regularly.

It is also commonly the case that depth markers are made from a completely different material than the surfacing that surrounds them. While broomed concrete and other textured surfaces can provide a certain level of slip-resistance, ceramic tiles have the potential to create a slippery situation. The difference in materials can also look odd if a surface such as pour-in-place is used since safety markers cannot be seamlessly integrated into the deck and may be overlooked entirely.

To address these pain points, starting several years ago, Life Floor developed depth markers, no-diving symbols, and other prominent methods of safety messaging that are all made out of our slip-resistant tile materials and uphold the same level of detail and quality found in the rest of our products. With precision cutting, we have been able to achieve extremely fine details that mimic traditional markers, but can also seamlessly integrate into any Life Floor surface. Since they are custom cut with lettering that goes the entire depth of the tile, any messaging created with Life Floor will last the full lifetime of our product. Because lettering is cut into our markers, rather than painted or coated on the surface, it won’t fade from traffic or chemical exposure over time. It will likewise remain legible even after prolonged UV exposure due to Life Floor’s built-in UV Resistance. All of these factors ensure that clarity of messaging will remain prominent.

Life Floor also offers fully customizable options to accommodate specific attractions or match facility theming while also staying within code parameters. As new protocols are developed as a result of COVID-19, they will likely require new types of signage. Our team is ready to help facilities adapt to any updated requirements and to continue to conform to existing best practices.

Pairing Safety Surfacing with Risky Play at Costa Bavaro Resort

Lopesan’s Costa Bavaro Resort

Located in Punta Cana on the coast of the Dominican Republic, Lopesan’s Costa Bavaro Resort offers 5-star accommodations and amenities to provide guests with an oceanfront Caribbean experience. Among the features on this 27-acre property is a 16,146 sq. ft. aquatic play area named Splash Island, the result of the creative collaboration between Martin Aquatic Design & Engineering and WhiteWater West and installation by Inside Edge. Splash Island’s main attraction is an elevated play structure by WhiteWater complete with slides and spray features. This area is augmented by integrated natural landscaping elements functioning as “islands” and Life Floor surfacing, which pairs theming with our tiles’ slip-resistant and impact-attenuating properties. Our High Tide color combination of blue tiles is featured in the main play area while sandy colors speckle the deck to simulate a beach where parents relax as children and teenagers play. The pairing of Life Floor surfacing with WhiteWater’s multi-level play structure and the other spray features on-site creates an attraction committed to both adventurous play and safety.

Large landscaped “islands” separate the larger risky play area from the adjacent splash pad where smaller children may feel more comfortable. These different zones help shape children’s development at different stages. Any type of water play for infants and toddlers can be seen as risky from their perspective. For instance, interacting with spray features on a splash pad is often a new and exciting experience. Life Floor surfacing enables this type of early water play and exploration while also providing cushioning for potential falls from wobbly footing at this age.

Children will ultimately seek out more adventurous activities as they get older. It is important for facilities, when possible, to include more advanced risky play features such as the elevated play structure, slides, and spray features seen at Splash Island. These play elements inspire them to explore and develop the skills necessary in adulthood to make good choices and have fun. Life Floor promotes this risky play by encouraging children to play how they were meant to: without fear of falling or getting seriously injured. By providing a slip-resistant and cushioned safety surface, children are supported in their activities and are emboldened to create their own stories as they interact with each other and the features at Splash Island.

We all love to see visible joy on children’s faces when they spend an exciting day imagining, discovering, and exploring in environments that cater to adventurous play.
