Yas Waterworld Unveils Refreshed Waterpark and Splash Pad

The 2024 renovation at Yas Waterworld in Abu Dhabi, led by WhiteWater, showcases a newly designed splash pad and an updated waterpark area with over 13,000 square feet of Life Floor surfacing. This revitalized water experience, equipped with vibrant Life Floor Inlays, brings a fresh aesthetic and added functionality to the park.

Splash Pad Design: Adding Inlays and Games

The vibrant splash pad uses the surface as a key thematic feature. A striking blue river courses down the pattern's center, bordered by sandy shores and thriving greenery. Bright pops of color are interspersed via Inlays from our Pond and Outdoor Exploration sets to enhance the attraction's theme and add a fun search-and-find style game. A hopscotch board designed into the Life Floor surface provides more traditional play opportunities and expands the possibilities for different play styles.

Marah Fortress: RainFortress by WhiteWater

At Marah Fortress, WhiteWater's RainFortress structure offers guests an immersive experience with desert palace-inspired theming that aligns beautifully with the local landscape. The design features geometric paneling on the platforms that resemble stained glass and strategically placed boulders to add elevated natural elements. Beneath the RainFortress, a Life Floor pattern starts at the center with a sand-colored island motif and radiates outward with teal tones rippling like waves.

A larger-than-life turtle graphic was designed into the Life Floor surface as a navigational tool, guiding guests on where to stand when the thrilling dump bucket is about to be released.

Nearby, a prominent 7-meter dolphin reflects a similar visual signal as an area where families with children can relax and engage with quieter ground sprays. Smaller standard Inlays encourage movement, such as the brightly colored fish leading away from slide exits and back to the entry point to keep the fun going all day.

DURABILITY MADE FOR THE SCORCHING HEAT

Imagine the hottest conditions on earth. Standing on the equator in peak summer UV, during a solstice, in full sunlight. Then, stay there for 750 hours straight. That’s the rigorous testing our tiles withstand as they’re certified for UV Resistance in accordance with NSF/ANSI/CAN 50. And that’s not all - they also have to pass slip-resistance and impact absorption testing after UV tests are complete.

Life Floor brings a wow factor to the area, which helps better area utilization even in those corners where there are less features on the structure as the guests would relax on the floor and probably not even need sunbeds.
— Lijo Jose, WhiteWater

Life Floor: Enhancing Guest Experience

According to Lijo Jose of WhiteWater, Life Floor has transformed the space by maximizing guest interaction and comfort, even in quieter corners of the waterpark where features may be fewer. The soft, inviting Life Floor surface encourages guests to relax directly on the flooring, making it an integral part of the waterpark experience.

Aquatics is for everyone regardless of age, ability, or play style. We hear from venues all the time that guests stay longer and rave about the amenities where Life Floor is installed. Caretakers feel invited to get on their kids’ level with our cushioned tiles and truly feel like they can play too.

Whether its sitting and relaxing while surrounded by small floor jets or frolicking through dueling water cannons - our surfaces promote positive experiences and people can play boundlessly as they were meant to do.

The 2024 renovation at Yas Waterworld, with Marah Fortress and the revitalized Splash Pad, celebrates the regional culture and innovative play, making it a must-visit attraction in Abu Dhabi.

2023 Make a SPLASH! Grant Contest Inclusive Design Winner: Morgan's Inspiration Island

In 2023, we hosted our fourth annual Make a SPLASH! Grant Contest to award two deserving organizations in the United States an all-expenses-paid splash pad surface. One award was for a facility that exemplified inclusive design principles, and the other was need-based for a deserving community that met specific benchmark criteria.

We received some incredible applications and out of many impactful entries, one rose to the front. Today, we’re proud to showcase the Inclusive Design Award winner’s installation: Morgan’s Wonderland for Will’s Hang 10 Harbor located at Morgan’s Inspiration Island in San Antonio, Texas.

What stood out most to our team was the thoughtful and holistic approach to inclusivity. Their Ultra-Accessible™ waterpark considers all abilities so that entire families can play and be together for the whole experience from start to finish.

Morgan’s Wonderland is a magical place for those with special needs and disabilities and those without to come together in environments that promote Ultra-Accessibility™ and inclusion. It became the world’s first Ultra-Accessible™, fully-inclusive theme park in 2010. Our entirely wheelchair-accessible park features more than 25 elements, including rides, playgrounds, and other attractions. Among the most popular are our colorful carousel, the Whirling Wonder Ferris Wheel, the Sensory Village of storefronts encouraging imaginative play, the Wonderland Express train that travels for almost a mile around our 8-acres, catch-and-release fishing lake, and playscapes with multiple types of swings, including out exceedingly popular wheelchair swings. While we recognize the exceptional qualities of these one-of-a-kind features, it is the outcome of priceless memories and a feeling of belonging that we are most proud of. Families of individuals with special needs interviewed during the creation of Morgan’s Wonderland Park shared that not only would a park be fun and exciting, but most importantly, they wanted a space to enjoy TOGETHER.

The tremendous success of nonprofit Morgan’s Wonderland led to the addition of Ultra-Accessible™ Morgan’s Inspiration Island splash park in 2017. Morgan’s Inspiration Island at Morgan’s Wonderland is the one and only Ultra-Accessible™ Splash Park located in San Antonio, Texas. In keeping with Morgan’s Wonderland’s mission of inclusion and the desire to enable everyone to play, Morgan’s Inspiration Island is like a tropical paradise with five colorful splash pads, a River Boat Adventure Ride, and revolutionary waterproof wheelchairs. Morgan’s Wonderland and Morgan’s Inspiration Island Splash Park has welcomed over 2 million guests form 122 countries. Today, Morgan’s Inspiration Island splash park continues to welcome the most guests compared to the rest of the season.”
— Brooke Kearney, Special Project Officer, Morgan's Wonderland

When asked what winning this grant would mean to their facility, Brooke Kearney who serves as the Special Project Officer at Morgan’s Wonderland said,

Winning this grant would maintain our mission to provide a fun, clean, and beautiful environment free of physical and economic barriers that all individuals can come to an enjoy regardless of age or ability. Unfortunately, countless children and adults with special needs do not have access to facilities that enable them to enjoy outdoor recreation fully. Nonprofit Morgan’s Wonderland is changing that everyday. Since its inception in 2010, anyone with a special need has been admitted free of charge, no questions asked. Hence, the majority of funding support received from the community underwrites the cost to admit our target population of individuals with special needs and disabilities for free, leaving limited funding to support major capital improvement projects. By winning this grant, Life Floor will contribute to impacting over 100,000 individuals annually through inclusive and Ultra-Accessible™ play.
— Brooke Kearney, Special Project Officer, Morgan's Wonderland

Our 2023 entrants chose from 6 pre-designed themes that would be tailored to fit their project scope, but we were so moved by this story that we decided to do something more. Our Design Studio created a themed beach motif with a custom Murals element, life-sized custom surfboard Inlays, and other standard Inlays from our Marine set to complement the narrative at the splash pad.

Experience at Every Scale with Jesse Muller of Perry-Becker Design

We’re excited to share an interview with Jesse Muller, ASLA, AZA, TEA of Perry-Becker Design where we talked about what storytelling means to him. Jesse currently serves as the firm’s Marketing Manager/Design Associate and has been on the team for the last 9 years. He has worked on a variety of projects from Toy Story Land at Walt Disney World Resort to the Mai-Kai Polynesian Restaurant (reopening Fall 2024).

Tell us about one of your favorite stories. It could be fiction, non-fiction, or any story.

“Davy Crockett was, for me, a character that I latched onto right away when I was young because of the time period that he lived in, figuring his way out in the frontier, living off of the land, and I've always been a very passionate kid about nature and the environment.

If you give me a choice between a million-dollar suite in the city, watching a sports game, or just being in the forest listening to a creek going by, I'll choose the creek every time because there's something that's special about just being in nature and having that deep connection with it.”

Was there a specific story or adventure that stands out?

“The time period before he became governor and became involved in politics and was more of the Frontiersman living in the wilderness and helping out his neighbors and just kind of doing his own thing in his own way, has always been a really cool, fun memory for me.

I had the (faux) raccoon skin cap, the moccasins, leather-fringe jacket, the toy rifle from Disneyland (when they used to sell toy guns). I wanted to be Davy Crockett. Everyone wanted to be Davy Crockett. I still today sometimes want to be him, but an equally impactful story that stands out, is the one in which we use landscape architecture in the themed entertainment industry, to create environments for people to go into and feel like THEY are Davy Crockett.”

What would you consider to be the greatest success in a themed space? What would make a themed space successful, in your opinion, with storytelling?

“If we're strictly talking about themed experiences and thematic design, it’s giving people the chance to suspend their beliefs, venture into another galaxy or another world, be immersed in that experience, follow along with the characters that they love, feel like they're part of a story, and then come back and appreciate all the exciting things that they got to do that day. We sometimes get to go and visit the parks and see people's reactions when a new attraction opens.

For me, it’s sitting on a bench watching families excitedly run by. Most of the work that we do is in the background. If you think about landscape architecture, it's the paving that you're walking on, it's the curbs, it's the railing that you're holding on to when you're going up the stairs, it's all the plants everywhere around you. It's the way that when it rains, it drains to a drain, it doesn't flood. All of those things are so ancillary that they’re not really the focus of someone's attention. If they're having fun at an attraction or if they're having fun in a space, part of the reason is because of the work that we've done, and the environment they're stepping into.”

Disney's Animal Kingdom Kangaroo Barrier, photo provided by Jesse Muller

“I would give a second example of a zoological related scenario where, if you design a habitat correctly and successfully, you're giving guests the ability to make an impactful connection with wildlife that leads them towards feeling this sense of stewardship, with belonging and responsibility to protect wildlife. What a lot of zoos are trying to do with all their new exhibits they're developing is create immersive experiences that are not only beautiful and fun to engage with and be surrounded by, but also something that gives you a feeling of connection and encourages citizen science. Then, when these guests go home, they're able to then still connect with what they saw that day, look up virtual cams or be part of an online game or whatever it is, there are ways they can participate then act towards conservation - that's a huge success for us.

Another person that we admire from a storytelling perspective is Steve Irwin. The stories that he told when he was filming documentaries, and the passion in his voice when he explained things or he saw something scurry by and he’d go run after it. It didn’t matter how many times he got bit, he got people to feel the same way that he did about what he saw through storytelling.”

The most impactful stories for me are stories that make you think differently.

Shade at Toy Story Land Queue, photo provided by Jesse Muller

Can you talk about a project that's centered around a strong story and what made that story come to life?

“A recent project we worked on was Toy Story Land at Hollywood Studios. The story there is that you're in Andy's backyard, and all the toys are life size - so they're huge, and you’re the size of an ant, and you're walking through all these places. And the design team figured out how to design benches that are made up of popsicle sticks or dominoes. Or shade structures that are things that Andy would have found around the house that he just stuck in the ground in the yard to play and become one with his own imagination. The story was reinforced by all of the props that are being developed by Disney and put out into that space. We were able to help navigate how the guests are moving through that space and where they're looking first and where they're looking second, and controlling those views so it doesn't feel overwhelming.

You can't just put up a pergola or a trellis and call it a day. You have to make it feel like it fits into the rest of the space. For shade, gameboards were used to make it look like Andy had constructed something for his toy set, and he just kind of put it in the backyard. It's now actually doubling as shade structures for the guests, so they're not always in the sun. We had to go through the process of using real reference imagery from the movies, references from actual toys that got developed (yes we played with blocks at work), and look at how we can manipulate these things so they fit in the story. It can’t detract from what's already there. Like the sign that says restrooms is made out of toy blocks. Each letter is kind of askew and placed on top of the building to let you know this is where the restrooms are. It's not just going to say ‘restrooms’' - it's going to do it in a fun way.

Those are the details that we fixate on, that we try to include in everything that we do, even when it's a resort  or a multi-family project or if it's a pool amenity for a housing complex, we're thinking on the same level of detail like that. Like which way do the pavers run so that when you drive over them, when you come home, you feel a difference in the drive, the bumpiness of the drive, and it lets you know that you've arrived at home. Not everybody picks up on that, but the people that do pick up on it appreciate that, and then they can tell that story to someone else and maybe open up their eyes to something that they didn't notice before.”

Mai-Kai Polynesian Restaurant, Site Plan Rendering provided by Jesse Muller

“We're working on a project right now down in Fort Lauderdale, the Mai-Kai Polynesian Restaurant, which is a very historic restaurant down there. When you enter that site, you used to drive over these wood timbers that would rumble, they would rattle a little bit because they weren't fully attached to the ground. So, the feeling of rumbling underneath your car not only gave the driver an experience, but the people just adjacent to the road inside the bar could hear the rumbling. It kind of sounds like thunder. And then on the windows, there's this water effect where it looks like rain, so they're having an experience of this thunderstorm. You're having experience of driving over something that puts you in a place and sets the tone for what you're about to experience. Those kinds of details are what we try to incorporate into all stories that we tell through landscape architecture in any way that we can. From shade structures to a different type of paving - whatever it is - that's the kind of mentality that we're always trying to include in all of our projects.”

What was a clever detail or surprise that your team put together for a project?

“Another thing I'm passionate about is Polynesian culture. If you want to talk about storytelling, go to the Polynesian islands, because everything they do is based on storytelling.”

Polynesian symbols used at Mai-Kai Polynesian Restaurant, provided by Jesse Muller

“For example, the Mai-Kai restaurant I just mentioned down in Fort Lauderdale. On the paving outside the main entrance, we are going to feature these three symbols. These Polynesian symbols are going to be sandblasted into the concrete so they're not right in your face. They're a secondary focal point. Those three symbols represent different aspects of the storytelling process for the Polynesian cultures.”

“One of them is Moana, the word represents ocean. That symbol represents harmony with nature. And there's Koru, which is a spiral, which represents regrowth and rebirth and rejuvenation. And then there's the fishhook, which is Hei Matau, which represents safe passage usually over water, but it's safe passage regardless of where you're going. Those three symbols connect with the project as people are walking up to the building, so it's encouraging people to safely travel from where they were to where they're going.

This was a dilapidated building that closed in 2020 because the roof caved in. It's from the 1950s so it's old and falling apart, but this project is bringing it back to life of what it used to be. When I presented those three things at a Tiki convention last year, everybody went crazy because they were picking up on those subtleties that we included, and we did that intentionally, because we want the details to speak to the story, but not in an in-your-face kind of a way. To be honest with you, finding those symbols, realizing how they connect to the project, putting them in the ground so people can walk over them and see them and appreciate them was one of the best parts of that project.”

How do you think about surfacing in terms of incorporating the story into the surface?

The floor of a tropical rainforest is usually made up of decomposed natural earth and rotted wood; natural materials decomposing and breaking down. The World Famous San Diego Zoo demonstrates this exceptionally well when you're viewing the Orangutans and suddenly you walk onto this softer, spongy material you can feel under your feet. It feels great when you’ve walking around all day and you have a little break to rest. It puts you in that story that “I’m actually walking through a forest and I can feel it”. It's not always about what you're seeing, but it's what you're hearing, it's what you're smelling, and it's what you're feeling with your hands and your feet. Engaging the senses more into the materials that we're touching every day, I think would be a really good way to enhance storytelling in ways that it hasn't really been in the past.

You don't need guests to specifically identify, ‘hey, I feel better now because of A, B and C.’ Just to have them think, “I'm really enjoying this space” and then have them share with others who might experience it completely differently. Everyone's ultimately experiencing something good in a different way and that's an important story to tell right there. It's the same story, but we're all seeing or feeling it in different ways.

It doesn't matter what the subject matter is, if it's Davy Crockett or if it's Toy Story Land, if we're all able to appreciate the slowdown and not be thinking about ‘I have to go home later and do laundry,’ then you know it's a good experience for everyone. We aim to encourage more than just adding fun materials for their cool factor. While they enhance the visual appeal and support the story from an aesthetic standpoint, there's a deeper purpose. The goal is to create spaces that make people feel good when they experience what you've designed.”

V3 Sports Center: Elevating North Minneapolis Aquatics

V3 Sports Center serves North Minneapolis, MN and has a mission to “elevate our community through wellness, fitness, and education.” North Minneapolis is a historically underinvested community. According to V3’s research, “In 2019, 54% of the population was Non-White and 20% of the population under the age of 18. In the immediate area of The V3 Center, young adults under 18 make up roughly 40% of the population.” The V3 Sports Center was built in a prominent location and can be seen from downtown Minneapolis and Interstate 94. It has bus line service to further increase accessibility of the facility for the neighborhood.

A generational lack of swimming skills can become a cyclical problem and the first step towards ending those cycles is to provide access. This facility chose to go beyond a simple space by creating a true community hub. With nearly 12,000 kids within walking distance, they implemented thoughtful resources and spaces to engage, transform, and elevate the lives of kids in North Minneapolis. Programs include the John W Hardeman III Boys and Girls Club, summer camps, swimming lessons, childcare, and more. Their aquatics department offers several programs: Swim 2 Learn, Swim 2 Earn, Pool Play, and Open Pool.

All windows looking into the pool area can be fully closed with blinds to allow for greater privacy. This serves populations such as Muslim women who need modesty accommodations to swim. V3 Sports Center provides specific times for Muslim women and others who need privacy to freely enjoy the pool amenities.

I will say my favorite story is, since we opened June 22, when I was driving down Plymouth Avenue, and I saw the kids from the Northside Development Center, which is two blocks away from here during their summer camp, walking down to the V3 Center to do lessons. And this particular day, it was their celebration of finishing their six weeks of lessons. We celebrate them at the end of the six weeks. And with that being said, it was just such a good example of why we’re here. Being able to have a space and place in the community where the kids of Northside Development Center can walk here, get quality lessons in a world-class facility, celebrate, and be excited about what they’ve accomplished, all within their neighborhood. I think that was just a beautiful collaboration between our two organizations, which Northside Development Center is a part of Catholic Charities. Early on around aquatics, it’s all about the accessibility, the proximity, and the community collaborations that are happening to benefit people like Northside families.
— Malik Rucker, V3 Sports Executive Director

Beyond the incredible activity programming, V3 Sports creates meaningful employment opportunities for residents. “While there are countless non-profit organizations working to create economic stability, job opportunities, education equality and neighborhood revitalization, the unemployment rate in North Minneapolis is twice the rate of the rest of the city, and even worse for Black men. While the poverty rate is 15% for the White community in North Minneapolis, it is 42% for the Black community.”

In an interview with us in August 2024, Malik Rucker, Executive Director, commented, “We're up to about 70 jobs. Just last year, we only had about 8. So, we went from 8 to 70 in a year, which is affecting families. It's providing careers right here in the neighborhood, and those are some of the things that I'm super excited about, and we're only in the first few months.”

The Life Floor gives life to the pool and to the space. A lot of times when you see tile, it’s not as exciting, but having this with the pops of color has allowed us to not have to do as much on the walls. We let the floor lead the way and it’s a beautiful space. I haven’t seen anybody fall or slip, and we know people are going to run. The investment is worth it just by reducing the slips and when people do slip, they’re not hitting the ground as hard. It’s aesthetically pleasing, it definitely lightens up the space, and it works well with the natural light that’s coming in at the corner of Plymouth and Lyndale. The most input I get is just how beautiful it is. People notice it. They touch the ground and try to see how soft it is and if they’re gonna slip. It’s a beautiful addition.
— Malik Rucker, V3 Sports Executive Director
I’m just excited to continue to see families come together. It’s a family space. It’s a destination. There aren’t many spaces in North Minneapolis that the entire family can go to.
— Malik Rucker, V3 Sports Executive Director

The facility’s architect is LSE Architecture, a Black-owned architecture firm. For their work on this project, they were awarded alongside V3 Sports Center with the AIA Minnesota Merit Award and the Michael L. Schrock Award. Building was completed by RJM Construction.

On a granular level, this fitness center is a great example of a phased project approach. V3 Sports Center completed $26M phase 1 in 2024, prioritizing amenities that would best serve the community. Two selections included a 6 lane 25-meter pool and hydrotherapy pool with Life Floor surfaces. This center now has the first indoor lap pool serving North Minneapolis with multifunctional use for swimming lessons, exercise, and summer camps. Phase 2 will cost approximately $100M and will include an Olympic size 50-meter pool, STEAM programming, and a technology center.

We’re proud to be part of this incredible fitness center located just 4 miles from our U.S. Headquarters. A sincere thank you to the team at V3 Sports for bringing the V3 Sports Center to life and investing in our community. We look forward to your continued success elevating and transforming the lives of thousands.

Engaging Zero-Depth Entry Pool at Camp Margaritaville

Camp Margaritaville in Breaux Bridge, LA features nearly 4,000 sq ft (370 sq m) of Life Floor at the zero-depth entry pool in an elegant triangle gradient pattern.

VISUAL SIGNALS FOR INCLUSIVE AQUATICS

When state codes allow submerged applications to feature colors on the pool bottoms, zero-depth entries can incorporate visual signals for accessibility that show the depth of water is increasing.

At this location, sandy colors symbolize the beach and water tones gradually darken as the depth increases. This design choice is aesthetically pleasing while helping guests navigate the space more confidently.

HIDDEN DRAINS

A Life Floor DalLUX Drainage System by Daldorado is located at the amenity’s entry point to provide both design continuity and added safety. This type of drain positioned within a design has channels that run along the surface with strips of Life Floor adhered to them. Drainage isn’t impeded and tiles can incorporate custom elements even over the drains themselves.

Life Floor’s heat dispersion is especially useful in the Louisiana climate where temperatures reach over 90°F (32°C). Destinations with high UV Indexes often find that metal drain grates can cause burns due to heating up when not submerged. Our product integration partnership with Daldorado ensures that guests are better protected in comparison to traditional metal drains.

The photo below shows the drainage system exposed prior to Life Floor installation.

Playful FEATURES

The aquatic play structure and pool floor boast InterActive Play features that promote social engagement. From friendly water battles to collaborative play opportunities that produce thrilling water effects, interactive elements create opportunities for connection and shared experiences. Engineered with beloved kid-friendly technology, such as light-up bars indicating a feature’s “charging status,” buttons, pull ropes, touch sensors, and more, these features captivate guests longer than conventional open water flow designs.

curating THEMATIC FUN

Beach-inspired designs with bright, tropical elements are becoming increasingly popular in the aquatics industry. Many vacation-goers directly associate beaches and ocean vistas with relaxation, but importing sand isn’t sustainable and presents a challenge for filtration systems.

By using Life Floor to intone colors and gradients on the surface, venues can spark imaginations and create a space that reflects a relaxing day at the beach.

To learn how you can elevate the look and feel of your facility’s zero-depth entry amenity, begin a conversation with one of our account executives today. We can help you navigate your state’s code requirements for aquatic surfacing and support you in enhancing the safety, design, and accessibility at your facility.

2022 MAKE A SPLASH! GRANT CONTEST WINNER'S INSTALLATION: Rotary Splash Island at Sammy Haggard Park

In 2022, we co-hosted our third annual Make a SPLASH! Grant Contest with Inside Edge Safety Surfaces to award a municipality or non-profit organization in the United States with an all-expenses-paid splash pad surface. Our intent with this contest is to uplift communities across the country each year with beautiful splash pad surfacing designs that add increased safety for residents.

We received a record number of submissions and there were many deserving entries, but one of the applications we received stood out:

“‘Is there any place in the county that I can take my toddler to allow them to be comfortable in the water?’ is a frequent question posed to the Chamber of Commerce, Recreation Department, and anyone working with young children. This rural county in northeast Georgia has no public pools, splash pads, or similar venues closer than 30 – 60 minutes of its residents. However, water safety and early experiences are the focus of pediatrician’s guidance and health department PSAs due to statistics about children drowning. Enter the members of the county’s Rotary Club in 2020 who determined the need for a safe, affordable venue to meet the needs of young families and the large number of grandparents who are rearing grandchildren. The Rotary Club partnered with the Madison County Recreation Department to fund the construction of a splash pad at Sammy Haggard Park. Over an 18-month period, the entities worked together on location, design, color scheme to blend with the colors used internationally by Rotary Clubs. Concurrently, the Rotary Club met their goal of $125,000 to bring their dream to reality at the grand opening Memorial Day weekend 2021.

Folks were ecstatic, use far exceeded expectations, and then reality set in. OOPS! The concrete surface gets hot, sunscreen washes off and makes the surface slick, and the rough surface and toddlers’ toes are not compatible. Ensuring the facility is properly sanitized is hampered by the concrete surface’s porosity. It has become clear that specifications were short-sighted when planning an achievable funding campaign for a small group that immediately faced “Covid shutdowns.” The Recreation Department manages the facility well, having developed sanitizing schedules, put in temporary surfaces for walkways to eliminate slips from sunscreen overspray, and ensuring preventive maintenance is prioritized. Revenue loss for the department during the Covid shutdown and, now, the increase in price for supplies and materials required to run the department and rebuild programs eliminates budgeting for a surface for the splash pad in the next several years. A Life Floor surface will resolve the concerns of parents and caregivers who find flip-flops and toddlers playing on a wet surface creates unnecessary bruises and scrapes. A proper surface will, for years to come, preserve the efforts of the Rotary Club and their many donors to provide a much needed and welcomed venue. Without this grant, only stop-gap measures can be used. That reality will undoubtedly result in the deterioration of this one-of-a kind facility at our Department. Our research had concluded that Life Floor met our needs. This grant for the proper surface will ensure our children have the safest and best venue possible.”

- Shelley Parham, Madison County Recreation Director

This entry resonated with members of the Life Floor and Inside Edge Safety Surfaces teams who reviewed entries and collaboratively chose this facility as the winner.

Our 2022 Grant Contest entrants chose from 6 unique pre-designed themes that would be custom fit to their project scope. Madison County chose the Under The Sea option which features a beautiful triangle gradient Pattern in our Lagoon Theme. Sea Life and Marine Inlays can be seen across the splash pad in bright contrasting colors such as Limelight, Sunshine, Goldfish, Platypus, and Aqua.

The Make a SPLASH! Grant Contest’s co-host as well as Life Floor’s North American Preferred Installation Partner, Inside Edge Safety Surfaces, completed installation of the new surface in March of 2023. The crew worked with a high degree of professionalism and expertise to create a beautiful final result.

We hope this new safety surface will uplift and transform the way kids play at Rotary Splash Island in Danielsville, Georgia. We can't wait to hear the stories of how this installation will continue to benefit the community for years to come!

We’re thankful for the opportunity to give this deserving community a new Life Floor safety surface and hope for many seasons of fun to come! Thank you to Inside Edge Safety Surfaces for co-hosting this contest with us and for the expert installation.

INCLUSIVE DESIGN + SAFETY = MORE PLAY VALUE

One of the most important goals of the partnership between Waterplay and Life Floor is to bring even more free play and accessibility to aquatic spaces. Rapid River Lodge prioritized inclusive design in every spray feature and surfacing decision, using play zones to accommodate a wide variety of play styles and the needs of different waterplayers.

With a wide range of play opportunities, from the calmer zero depth entry area with pint-sized character sprays perfect for smaller kids, to the more adventurous activity tower with elevated platforms, water cannons, and slides, this play space invites all to have fun within their ability level and comfort zone. Along with the guidance of Fischer Brothers’ restoration expertise, the waterpark at Rapid River Lodge is beautifully reimagined.

River Rapid Lodge is the first facility to debut Fischer Brothers’ new Double Lane Toddler Slide. With its modern, two-lane structure, the Double Lane Toddler Slide was designed to produce double the fun. Thoughtfully engineered materials and the intentional inclusion of Life Floor's cushioned Landing Pads make these slides beautiful, fun, and safer for the littlest water park goer.

Life Floor safety surfacing covers every walkable surface in the waterpark. Bands of Pomegranate-colored tile offer contrasting visual cues that signal guests to exercise caution around each body of water. Visual signals are an important safety feature to show depth changes, the presence of features, and represent a changing landscape when paired with zoning for different stages of childhood development.

Thank you to Fischer Brothers and Waterplay for a collaboration filled with fun! Our team loves working on projects that focus on retrofitting facilities with inclusivity, safety, and play in mind.

Life Floor

Life Floor was founded upon a vision to create safer, more memorable experiences at aquatic facilities. Since 2011, our mission has expanded to include innovative design, increased play value, and inclusivity wherever our surfacing is installed.

Across all of our unique projects, one thing remains the same: improving aquatic environments for all people will always be at the heart of our purpose.

Custom Aquatic Theming at Wet'n'Wild Gold Coast, Australia

Wet'n'Wild Gold Coast in Australia chose Life Floor for their H2Oasis splash pad. This unique 8-color design was created by Burling Brown Architects located in Queensland.

This installation features a unique custom-cut design highlighted with Porcelain Life Floor tiles weaving through the main colors. These Porcelain lines create organic shapes with contrasting color blocks and allow for subtle paths of engagement through spray fixtures.

Guest experience is important for an aquatic amenity such as H2Oasis. Choosing colors for the surface that complement the surrounding environment allows for immersive theming and lends to a guest’s overall impression of their visit.

Thank you to Grant Burgess, Managing Director for Life Floor Australia and New Zealand, for his creative collaboration with Burling Brown Architects and his strategic partnership with Grassports Australia installers. Their vision for executing this project successfully with excellence resulted in innovative new installation tactics that can be applied to future projects in Australia.

Waterslide Tower Restoration and Refresh in Spencer, Iowa

In January of 2022, the City of Spencer, Iowa contacted Fischer Brothers about replacing the failed fiberglass steps on their waterslide tower at the Spencer City Aquatic Center. An inspection in February revealed that the tower’s fiberglass steps and landings had deteriorated to the point where there was an immediate need for repair. The once-white surfaces were stained after years of use, most of the previous surfacing product was worn smooth, and cracks had developed in the fiberglass.

The stairs and decks were originally made with a fiberglass exterior and a balsa wood coring interior. Cracks in the fiberglass had allowed water to rot the balsa wood coring from many harsh Midwestern seasons. The saturated coring would freeze each winter and thaw every spring, incrementally delaminating the fiberglass from its internal coring.

Before: Cracks in the Fiberglass

This project provided a great opportunity for Fischer Brothers and Life Floor to partner in solving this city’s slide tower issues. In August, Fischer Brothers sent a crew to tackle the project. They began by identifying all the structural problem areas and started work. Large portions of fiberglass were completely rebuilt using synthetic coring instead of balsa wood and more than 20 gallons of resin were used to repair the landings and stairs. Every square inch of the fiberglass was either rebuilt or sanded down to remove the old surface texture and create a smooth and stable surface for the installation of Life Floor safety surfacing.

Life Floor Safety Surfacing

Life Floor was the preferred choice for this WhiteWater and Fischer Brothers project in the City of Spencer, Iowa since the safety surfacing not only provides increased slip-resistance and cushioning, but also refreshes the visual appeal of the whole tower. The city chose to use Iceberg and River Rock colors in Life Floor’s Ripple 2.0 texture for this project. The pale blue Iceberg tiles were used on all the landings and stair treads and the grey River Rock tiles were installed on the step nosings and risers to provide contrasting colors and added safety. The surfacing on the slide tower is now more comfortable for bare feet, and it looks great!

BEHIND THE SCENES INSTALLATION AT NORTH POINT TRAILS COMMUNITY

The North Point Trails Community in Winkler, Manitoba, Canada was established in 2020 through Triple E Developments. Within this community, North Point Park hosts a beautiful playground as well as a splash pad featuring Life Floor safety surfacing in vibrant colors. When choosing a flooring option for the aquatic feature, safety was a priority for the city and the upcoming community.

Installation of this splash pad was completed by Prairie Surfaces in October 2020 and overseen by our Installation Specialist, Matt Thelen. Their team battled fierce weather conditions including strong, steady winds and rain clouds threatening overhead for days.

BEHIND THE SCENES INSTALLATION AT NORTH POINT TRAILS COMMUNITY

Thelen recounts the experience, “[We] pretty much have to have someone beside you holding one tile at a time so it doesn’t blow away. All gluing done in the trailers. [We] parked a semi trailer onsite to help block the wind. The boxes move with us to create a dust/wind barrier as well.”

BEHIND THE SCENES INSTALLATION AT NORTH POINT TRAILS COMMUNITY

Despite these environmental challenges, the Prairie Surfaces team installed this beautiful splash pad with top professionalism and care for detail.

[Life Floor] provides parents peace of mind knowing their children can play safely on the surface.
— Angela Elias, Executive Assistant, Triple E Developments
“It’s easy to move around, it looks great. There’s a washroom building tied in, so you can get changed right at the park. Nearby there’s a gazebo, and a play structure, so it’s just overall a great green space.
— Jordan Driedger, Winkler's Director of Community Services

This splash pad in Winkler, MB is one of the first facilities in Canada to have a certified splash pad safety surface. The NSF/ANSI/CAN 50:26 standard, which sets forth product requirements for aquatic recreation safety surfacing, was recently expanded to include Canadian territories.  Manitoba’s code does not currently reference NSF 50 Standards, but neighboring territory Saskatchewan has a comprehensive reference within the territory’s code for aquatic facilities.

Safety Drives Fun at Handy Park Splash Pad

Handy Park Splash Pad, Redford Township, Michigan

In 2020, we co-hosted our first ever Make a SPLASH! Contest with Inside Edge Safety Surfaces to award grants to municipalities in the U.S. for upgrading their splash pad surfaces. We initiated this contest to be able to uplift communities across the country with beautiful splash pad surfacing designs that add increased safety for residents. Redford Township, Michigan was one of our winners, earning our 3rd place prize, a 25% grant towards tiles and installation.

Redford Township’s splash pad is coming up on our 15th year of operation and continues to remain one of the most popular spring and summer destinations here in our community… This destination is free and open to the public regardless of what community they live in. Many of our families and surrounding community are low to moderate income so this provides an affordable fun option for summertime fun. Back when the project was completed, options for flooring for our system, budget and for sustainability was the brushed concrete. Over time and the high volume of usage, the concrete surfacing has worn down and has become very slippery over the past couple of years. We have tried several options through local contractors to find a solution, but unfortunately we made the decision to close the splash pad at the end of the 2019 season in order to find a safe, cost effective, long term solution. Since this time, we have been looking at options to re-open this popular summertime activity and maintain a safe flooring which is essential. Due to COVID this past year, Recreation Departments have been hit hard and unfortunately we had to put the project on hold. If Redford Township won the Make A Splash Contest this would help restore this amenity for the residents of not only our community but those around us and enable us to operate for many more years to come.

The safety issues Redford Township experienced with their surfacing at Handy Park really resonated with our team. We know how important splash pads can be to provide accessible water play to communities across the country so we were happy to award this municipality a prize to make their surfacing safer. Our Studio Team designed a High Tide Theme in a 401 Pattern for the 2000 sq ft installation to brighten up the splash pad while providing a budget-friendly option along with the 25% grant.

This automobile-themed splash pad showcases a unique car wash spray feature to inspire kids to use their imagination as they drive through the jets and sprays. With a variety of elements from very small jets to larger dumping devices, there are water play activities available to engage guests of all ages, abilities, and comfort levels.

Handy Park Splash Pad, Redford Township, Michigan

When Kelsi Goss, our Vice President of Design, visited the splash pad one weekend this summer, she remarked at how many community members and families were enjoying this feature together.

It was great to see such a wide age range of kids having fun in the water and how many families chose to set up picnics and tents adjacent to the splash pad at Handy Park. I watched a few kids take a tumble but they bounced right up again to resume playing. This wouldn’t have been the case if they had fallen on concrete.
— Kelsi Goss, Life Floor Vice President of Design

Having Life Floor on the surface enables a variety of activities and types of risky play. Babies can crawl across the soft surface and begin to explore water play with smaller jets. Children can be found sprinting around the splash pad playing tag, hiding under the water umbrella, “driving” through the car wash, and even doing cartwheels. We’re happy to have helped improve this community feature so residents can fully enjoy all this splash pad has to offer!

SEEING IS BELIEVING: HOW LIFE FLOOR TRANSFORMS AQUATIC FACILITIES

Since 2011, we’ve repeatedly seen the noticeable visual transformation that Life Floor can make at facilities. Brilliant pops of color have surfaced over drab, grey concrete and gorgeous, interactive themed designs have replaced failing pour-in-place products. Paired with the promise of safer surfaces, Life Floor makes all the difference.

In honor of National Park and Recreation Month we’ve featured some of our favorite before and after photos of municipal projects below.

CEDARCREST SPLASH PAD - BLOOMINGTON, MN

Cedarcrest Splash Pad in Bloomington, MN is located near our Minneapolis office and is often shown to new hires and visitors as a classic example of a Life Floor installation. Before resurfacing with our foam-rubber tiles, Cedarcrest had grey concrete that was indistinguishable from the adjacent playground. This was a major issue for the facility because kids would often come running from the playground onto the splash pad only to fall because of the hard, slippery surface. Not to mention, the park lacked color and whimsy. By choosing Life Floor to increase safety and add design, a bright blue triangle gradient pattern now serves as a visual cue to visitors that the environment is changing as they enter the water play area. This resurfacing effort was so transformative on the look of the park that residents thought an entirely new splash pad had been installed!

TRAILHEAD PARK SPLASH PAD - WINTER HAVEN, FL

The City of Winter Haven, FL originally built this splash pad in 2016 with a grey concrete finish. They resurfaced it with different products about 3-4 times over the years as they tried to reduce slip-and-fall accidents since they realized concrete was ultimately unsafe on its own. The aquatics division performed a significant amount of research as they searched for the best solution when they were finally introduced to Life Floor. The committee at Winter Haven ultimately opted for our safety surfacing, pleased with the fact that our tiles could reduce injuries while also being certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN Standard 50. This benefit of increased safety was paired with the vibrant blue square patterning that the city selected, visually enhancing the entire facility.

PARR PARK SPLASH PAD - GRAPEVINE, TX

With concrete slabs on splash pads heating up to dangerous temperatures in hot climates like Texas, the City of Grapevine resorted to a concrete coating. Unfortunately, the coating increased the number of slip and fall injuries. The city approached Life Floor knowing our products feel cooler than concrete and remain slip-resistant when wet from their experience at the Pleasant Glade pool. The city also wanted a completely new and unique design to stand out from other splash pads in the community. Using a mottled effect across the splash pad with our hexagon shape, Life Floor was installed in a bright, modern color palette to create an elevated experience for visitors.

Veterans Park Splash Pad - Monroe Township, NJ

Veterans Park Splash Pad in Monroe Township, NJ was originally surfaced with a blue fleck pour-in-place product that was failing. It had needed to be patched multiple times and was getting into the facility’s filtration systems. It was difficult to clean and keep clean despite best efforts and the township was ready to replace the substrate with a more durable and easily cleanable surface. This is an issue our team has encountered on a countless number of refurbishments. Products designed for dry play simply don’t hold up in wet environments especially when paired with UV or chemical degradation over time. Inside Edge Safety Surfaces recommended Life Floor to the city and installed a beautiful 301 Pattern design at the splash pad.

ANDREW BELLE SPLASH PAD - DOTHAN, AL

Prior to winning our 2020 Make a Splash! Grant Contest, Andrew Belle Splash Pad featured a concrete surface, similar to many other splash pads across the country. The community had a need to improve safety at this facility and a desire to brighten up the area with a vibrant design. With the addition of Life Floor, the Andrew Belle Splash Pad is now cushioned and slip-resistant while featuring a bold mix of square tiles, which have completely transformed the location. This upgrade was a welcome improvement for the local community who has already started enjoying their new surface this summer.

Make a SPLASH! Contest Grand Prize Installation: Dothan, AL

In 2020, we co-hosted our first ever Make a SPLASH! Contest with Inside Edge Safety Surfaces to award a municipality in the U.S. with an all-expenses-paid splash pad surface. Our intent in initiating this contest was to be able to uplift communities across the country each year with beautiful splash pad surfacing designs that add increased safety for residents.

DothanAL_Q22021_RGR11039.jpeg

One of the applications we received immediately stood out.

Let me tell you about Dothan. My City. My Heart.

Nestled in the southeast corner of Alabama, Dothan is a town of 70,000. Just 16 miles from Florida and 20 miles from Georgia, Dothan is a medical hub and is known as the Peanut Capital of the World. My charming little town is part of the Wiregrass region, which is named for a native grass, Aristida stricta, which quite literally feels like wire grass. Dothan is home to the World’s Smallest City Block, Historical Musical Murals, and the Peanut Festival.

The people here are kind. They love to play ball, swim, fish, and BBQ. They love football. You are obligated as a citizen to choose a team – Auburn or Alabama… And the rivalry is palpable. There is a church on every corner with welcoming smiles. You can merge into traffic with a wave.

However, our splash pad needs some love. It’s adjacent to a pool in a low-income area of our city… Directly behind one of the oldest recreation centers in Dothan. It’s across the tracks from a large housing project. Many of the children in this neighborhood are not able to take trips or go on vacation, but they can walk down to the splashpad for free. These guys deserve a place to play that they can be proud of and getting a Life Floor renovation would be just the ticket.

Don’t just choose Dothan, choose the citizens in this neighborhood! They deserve the best, and you can help us provide that!

This entry struck a chord with many members of the Life Floor and Inside Edge Safety Surfaces teams who reviewed entries and ultimately chose the winner. A central tenet of our company is our core value of People. We wake up every day and strive to make the aquatics industry a safer place through surfacing so reading this heartfelt story played a strong role in our decision to award Dothan, AL the grand prize winner of our grant. The sincerity of Kelly’s entry on behalf of her city and her clear love for the people that live there made us excited to upgrade their local park with a new splash pad surface.

When it was time to call our first, second, and third place winners, we called Kelly at Dothan first. Our CEO, Jonathan Keller, our Vice President of Design, Kelsi Goss, and our East Coast Regional Sales Manager, MaryAnn Eifert, couldn’t wait to deliver the good news. The excitement in Kelly’s voice was evident and after she accepted, we proceeded with next steps to finalize the design and coordinate the installation.

As part of the design process, we collaborated with Kelly to include one of our new colors, Seafoam, as well as a custom logo to showcase Dothan’s pride. The process with our Studio Team was iterative and we ultimately landed on a vibrant 5-color square pattern featuring Ocean, Bluebird, Aviator, Limelight, and Seafoam.

Themed Aquatic Safety Surfacing at Texas Tech University

Life Floor’s new Glacier Theme is featured at the pool and splash pad at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX with a custom logo showcasing the school’s Red Raiders pride. This project was initiated when Texas Tech approached our Preferred Installation Partner in North America, Inside Edge Safety Surfaces, to determine a solution for their aquatics facility. After experiencing issues with maintaining and repairing the previous worn concrete surface, they were in search of a new surfacing option. Life Floor ended up being the right solution due to its custom design capabilities and safety features of impact cushioning and slip-resistance.

Themed Aquatic Safety Surfacing at Texas Tech University

The Texas Tech logo on the splash pad is a strong feature of this project that everyone sees when entering the facility and sparks school spirit by association alone. Custom logos and theming to match a facility’s design are two of our favorite things. Logos like this one are a great way for universities and colleges to showcase school pride since they are so unique to each institution. Integrating a logo into the aquatics deck can create a prominent feature that can also serve as advertising during swim events similar to basketball courts that showcase the home team’s logo.

In this tiered design, a triangle gradient in a slight variation of our 302 Pattern replicates sweeping waves into the deeper zone of the gradated sun deck. Students, staff, and guests can now relax in this area in the hot summer sun on the cushioned and non-abrasive Life Floor.

A THEMED COLLABORATION WITH WESTPORT POOLS AND MEXICO, MO

It's an exciting season for our team as we watch so many newly renovated facilities reopen across the country. One of our most recent installations at the Fairgrounds Aquatic Center in Mexico, MO features both a zero-depth entry and a separate splash pad.

The City of Mexico, MO had originally been working with Westport Pools, one of our Registered Aquatic Partners, on this project. When they mentioned their interest in a resilient safety surfacing solution, Life Floor was recommended, and our team was looped into the design process.

Fairgrounds Aquatic Center in Mexico, MO

We worked collaboratively with the city on several flooring design options that would add aquatic theming to both their zero depth entry and splash pad. The intent was for the safety surfacing to complement their spray features and play structure on site. Ultimately, the designs they selected achieved their goals of mimicking a seashore for the zero depth entry and a body of water for the splash pad while also staying within budget.

The design of this particular zero depth entry is unique in that it combines a triangle gradient for the "sand" and "water" zones while also featuring a clean, curvy custom cut edge separating the two. Because Life Floor is manufactured as 2' x 2' tiles, cutting curves into any design results in increased overages as the squares are trimmed away. By selectively choosing to only use this effect for the shoreline, the city was able to achieve their design intent without the added expense of creating the entire gradient effect out of curves. Marine inlays were included to augment the theming. Fish and seahorses can be found in the "water" while crabs and starfish can be found on the "sand."

Fairgrounds Aquatic Center in Mexico, MO

The simple design of the splash pad uses our popular High Tide 301 Theme and Pattern. This tile arrangement is one of our most cost-effective options to create the effect of water and is often enhanced by thematic inlays like the fish shown here.

Fairgrounds Aquatic Center in Mexico, MO

Collaborating with Westport Pools and the City of Mexico, MO throughout this iterative process was extremely rewarding for our team. We're appreciative of their partnership and their shared commitment of creating safer and more beautiful aquatic spaces.

WATER SAFETY BY DESIGN AT JUNGLE BAY WATERPARK

The Westin Dubai and Le Méridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort in Dubai, UAE recently completed Jungle Bay Waterpark with the design and safety expertise of Whitewater West. The two resorts decided to create a unique family getaway that differentiated them from the hundreds of other hotels and resorts in the area by creating a massive, elegant waterpark. This strategy makes their properties the ideal family destinations in Dubai.

Inspired by the islands of Greece, the waterpark was designed intentionally with a clean, minimalist style. The park features rides and attractions for all ages including a Whizzard and Body Slides, Aquaplay 1750, gentle Kids’ Slides, and a Children’s Wave Pool for the whole family.

Jungle Bay Waterpark - The Westin Dubai and Le Méridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort in Dubai, UAE

The resorts previously had Life Floor on one of their pool decks and, after having a positive experience, decided to expand their use of Life Floor across the rest of the new waterpark. Jungle Bay Waterpark features approximately 21,500 sq ft (2,000 sq m) of Life Floor surrounding its amenities and features with a unique UV additive in the tiles which makes them last even longer under more intense sun conditions.

Safety and guest experience is key. Excluding the walkways, the entire waterpark has Life Floor which not only enhances the design of the park, but also reduces overall risk through safety surfacing. This vast expanse of Life Floor showcases the resort’s commitment to safety without sacrificing the pristine aquatic design that complements the resort. Life Floor’s cushioned and slip-resistant features provide guests with increased comfort throughout their stay.

Additionally, WhiteWater West combined their world-class water slides and features with complementary blue and white colors to provide Jungle Bay Waterpark with a complete package that never compromises safety for design. The central lighthouse element was incorporated into the project to add theming and a central starting point for many of the water slides.

Jungle Bay Waterpark - The Westin Dubai and Le Méridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort in Dubai, UAE

The design of the activity zones utilizes Life Floor’s standard triangle shape in multiple gradient patterns to create visual similarity without overdoing the design. This creates a feeling of cohesion across the entire facility by allowing the Greek Island theme to flow from one area to the next without halting guest engagement.
